I have a four month old male pyr. We have been keeping him in the house. We are expecting a baby in december, does anyone else who has a baby have a great pyr in there house, or did you have one inside when you brought your baby home. I am worried about the hair being around the baby, I would be thankful if anyone could help me on this subject. Sincerely

I have a 4 year old great pyrenees named "Goliath." I rescued him at 6 months old from an unscrupulous breeder. He is a truly wonderful, sensitive creature. Like many poorly bred purebreds, he has his share of health concerns. It took Goliath, his vet and I a while to determine he had food allergies causing persistent ear infections. I would like to know if any other pyr owners have any experience with their dog vomiting or regurgitating. Goliath is on a restricted diet, so we can't figure this one out. Any suggestions anyone could offer would be greatly appreciated.

I have a 7 month female Pyr. She is my Granddog. I babysit her each day so she is not alone when her Mom and Dad are at work. She is alittle hard headed but she is learning. I lost my other Granddog a Chow Chow at 4yrs old from a brain anyuism I was heart broken and did't know how to stop grieving but God sent us Maggie and what a wonder gift she has been. She has healed my heart. And I know my "Sammie girl" is looking down from the rainbow bridge and is finally happy we have stopped grieving over her. I think she sends little things to Maggie to let us know she is still with us. Maggie is a wonderful family dog and loves my 6yr. old Granddaughter, they are the best of friends. Maggie can't wait until Kayla gets here to have someone to play with.

We have a golden retriever/great pyrenees mix. Her name is Tasha and we've had her for three years and she is fantastic! We have children and our dog and our children get along wonderfully-Tasha even snuggles with our cat. The only complaint we could possibly have is that she does not like being inside-she loves the outdoors even in the winter. She'll only come in when it's freezing. We have a big yard, loving family and a wonderful neighborhood for walking so she has a good home life even if she is not herding sheep.

My 13 yr old male pyr has the exact problem you describe, Paula
The weakness in the hind end is from not walking as much as they should
My Holden began to walk less and less because his rear knees were painful.
Aspirin is working much better than rimadyl ever did. He improved a little when
we began mandatory walks. This is difficult, if you know the ambling meandering pace he moves at..
he definitely is one to stop and smell the flowers.

Our wonderful pyr, Sebastian, is ten and has been the greatest dog for our family but in the past year he has developed terrible problems with weakness in his knees, making it very difficult to get up and steps are nearly impossible for him the vet said his EKG showed moderated changes but he has considerable loss of muscle in his hind quarters. Has anyone else experienced this with older pyrs?

I love your website! I'm interested in getting a Pyr someday. How easy are they to train and would they make good strictly outdoor dogs, or would they get too lonely, even if we were outside with them a lot? Also, I wanted a male and a female(not to breed), is it best to get a brother and sister, or two from seperate parents?

As my Pyr (Cerri) gets older (6years) her leg is getting worse. She had surgery when she was 1 for a luxating petellur (sorry about the spelling). She recovered well from the surgery and has been my best hiking partener for many years. The last 2 years, however, we have had to cut our trips short or skip them altogether, becuase her limp has been quite bad after only a short distance. I have tryed aspiren, Rimidol, and frequent rests but she still limps. She and I have been sad not walking much or me having to leave her behind.
Is there anything I can do to help her? Is she better sitting home sad while I hike or limping along with lots of rest stops?

I have a wonderful GP. His name is 'Simba The Great Pyrenese'. He was one (1) year old as of April 9. 2000. He is the purest of snow white with gleeming brown eyes. He was just weighed at 100 lbs. His Vet said he will fill out more and probably reach up to 120-130 easy! WOW! What a dog! While growing up as a child my family always had dogs. I have had 2 other dogs besides Simba. Buster, a Dalmation, died at the tender age of 9. He was my child. I never thought i could replace that special kind of love. I rescued an aussie mix, Remi, who has been faithful and protective of me. Stil...not the same without my Buster. Two years later i decided on a Great PYR. Simba took the family like fish to water. He has been a great friend and playmate to Remi, while being very attached to me. Simba has become the boy I lost long ago. Although Buster will always be in my heart and prayers, Simba has become the joy of my life. Such spirit and zest. God knew what he was doing when he created 'The Great Pyrenese'.

A most excellent breed. We bought one by accident and
spent our pastime watching her grow. I have watched
her back agressive growling dogs out of our camp site
with her nose and never show any sign of aggression
herself. A very social loving breed.

My Great Pyr, Holden, recently turned 13. I got him from Mountaineer Kennels in Berkley Springs, WV.
He has been with mee since college. He was a campus dog in Blacksburg, VA. He was quite famous, or at least well known.
I know he is on his last days. He has trouble getting up, but once up he can walk ok. It is not his hips, but actually his knees. He has little lateral strength of his hind end.
Anyways, Does anyone have stories of old Pyrs? How long a life is average? Let me know.

Molly, our 7 year old Pyrenees, is the joy of our lives. We have had her since a pup and also had her sister who we lost. This is the absolute most wonderful breed - she is truly human and we are so sad that our now-grown children did not have the companionship of a pyr as they were growing up. We cannot recommend these dogs enough for families. They are superior family members and our lives are so blessed to belong to our Molly.

I did everything "wrong" when I bought my little Niagara. I went to a back-yard breeder. He was wary of letting me see her mother and father because they might be aggressive. I bought the runt of the litter. Yet, she's the sweetest, funniest, gentlest, cutest little (75-pound) Pyr anyone could want. She's so sweet, she's named after the sweet white grape: Niagara.

Our "Alexander The Great" is the best dog I have ever had. We adopted Alex 2 years ago and have never regreted it. He is the best protector of women. He is always looking out for his mom. We take him for walks and everytime someone walks by he makes sure to get closer to me and raise his nose to let them know I am his. When my husband is away overnight, Alex sleeps outside the front door until I go to bed then he is off to the bedroom window under where he sleeps all night. He once saved my life by digging at the bottom of the house to let me know there was a gas leak. I will never own another type of dog after Alex leaves. If fact, we are thinking of moving just so we can get more room for another dog. Now, that's bad, when you are moving for the animals not for yourself!

We are adopting a four month old great Pyr. tommorow. The dog was abandonned and aparently neglected. He is very sweet and loves to play with other dogs, but has very little exposure to people and is therefore very shy. Any tips on making him feel comfortable in our home, and "bringing him out"? I just rescued a neglected Pyre from behind a pottery store in downtown dallas. He is severly underwieght, has bad sores around his neck where the chain was, but he doesn't have heartworms!! I thought he was a large golden retriever, of which I have two. Karl and I will nurse him back to health, then we will need to find him a loving home where people will let him in the house. it gets very hot in Dallas in the summer!
We think he is beautiful, and he is just a sweet as our goldens.

I have a 20 month old Pyr and I've decided there isn't anything better in the world than when Kisha climbs up on the couch and lays across my lap, laying her head against my chest. She'll sit there with me for the longest time with that mellow, content look on her face, like I'm the only thing she will ever need. You all know that look and the closeness that is felt between a pyr and her Mama!!

Help...... We have a four month old male pyr, and I can't seem to get him to tell me when he needs to go out. I tried the crate thing, but he drools so much that he will be completly soaked in no time, even with a fan blowing on him. I need some advice if anyone has any, PLEASE. He has an overbite and I think that may be the reason he drools, so if anyone has any ideas let me know.

Just acquired a 12 week old pyr and may be looking for a another one to live in the country with her. This dog is truly suited to our personality and family. She is now 3 1/2 months old and the kitchen counters are no longer safe, more training in that area will shortly be done. She does like cooked hamburger. Sleeps with the kids and is never far off when everyone is awake.

Our family was just enlarged with the addition of a Pyr. We have named him Noah. He is six weeks old and is a dear to everyone. I have looked at this breed for at least four years and it is all that and more!!! I am in love with Noah. There is just something about this breed....my husband is a Veterinarian and I have seen all there is to see....This dog will be the best dog for our family I just know it. He is already gentle...knows the word "no"...tells me when he needs to "go" and gives just enough loving!!! I'm sad I haven't had this breed all my life. My children will know though!!

My boyfriend and I were thinking of getting a pupp so we went to the pet store. I was looking at the pomeranians, my boyfriend spotted the biggest dog tin the store and said he had to have him. As I put the cuddly pomeranian away I agreed to getting this 35 pond "puppy." The dog rode home on my lap and I thought this would be the only time this dog would be on my lap. I was WRONG. Jake is now a 105 pound two year old and every chance he gets he is either trying to get in your lap or is in your lap. He is the best dog I have ever had and I don't know what it would like o day if we would have come home with that pomeranian instead of my "Prince Jacob!" He is absolutly the best dog in the world.

She just moved in and won our hearts immediately.

My first encounter with a "Pyr" was just a month ago and I haven't got this dog out of my mind yet! My two children and I fell in love with "Toby". We were visiting a goat farm and he was working. The owners retrieved "Toby" from guarding his flock so we could pet him. With his beautiful brown eyes, his majestic head and his loving, cuddly disposition I knew that I had to have a Great Pyrenees. We live on 10 acres out in the country. We have two horses, two cats, a Jack Russell and an aging Great Dane. "Sheller" our Great Dane use to accompany me on my daily hikes through the woods, I always felt safe. Now, she is too old to move much. My son likes to explore the creeks and woods behind our house and Sheller use to go with him also, but no more. We think a Great Pyrenees is our answer. If anyone can provide information of any breeders or any rescue organizations of this great breed in the North Carolina area, please contact me!!

We got our 1st Great Pyr in 1988. She died of diabetes in 1997 and I couldn't live another day without another one. We got Reno who's the size of shetland pony now. He was just a pup but he grew up very tall. Then last year I decided Reno needed someone to play with and we got Missy who's 2 months older than Reno but short and stocky and was a show dog. Very independent just like me. We have enjoyed these two so much, our next dog will always be a Great Pyr from now on. They are "people" too.

We just got a 13 month old Pyr female. Her name is Lexie and she is a magnificent, wonderful dog. We have had her for 5 days and I feel as though I have had her for 5 years. She is so loving to my children, and to my husband and me. She has had no problem blending in to our family, and understanding her place. She is obedient and fun and I am so glad we found her. We bought her from a couple who could no longer keep her. We thought she would seem to miss them, but she really seems very happy. I was a great decision to buy her.

I have a pyr puppy who is about 4 months. He has a bad overbite. I am worried about how this will affect him later in life. Does anyone else who owns one of the wonderful dogs, have on that has a overbite. If so could you please give me some insight. I would be so grateful and feel a lot better if i knew there were other dogs out there that had this and are perfectly normal. They said it cannot be fixed without major reconstructive surgery, we have already spent $400.00 on his broken leg and cannot afford to pay for that kind of surgery. Please let me know.

Just acquired a beautiful great pyrenees, mainly to guard my jacob sheep and pygmy goats. Her name is "Mollie" and she is so loving and smart, it is hard to leave her outside. She is 5 months old and loves the outdoors. Mollie never gets enough love to suit her, but she doesn't forget her "job". She enjoys burying her rawhide bones and digging them up. It's a game she plays in her spare time. We have cattle also, but they are not her responsibility. We also have a beautiful, wonderful, Black Lab - Coda! He is 7 years old and very much our indoor-outdoor companion and rides in the tractor, truck and car, going everywhere we go. He is not concerned that Mollie gets some of the attention as he is good with all animals, people and especially children. We are very blessed to have such good "friends" as these animals and also have two house cats, one white-Frosty and one black-Missy. They are all friends and even sleep together - - - with us,of course. I suppose Mollie would be as spoiled as all the others if she were allowed to come in the house. Does anyone out there use their Pyr to guard livestock?

We have 1.5 year old female named Hannah. She is the joy of our life. In every sense of the word - she is our "baby". She is so loyal, senisitive, smart and a great companion. It's almost has if she is human with her emotions. I guess the key to having a great dog is to be a great owner. Raising them properly will result in a good temperment. I suggest to non- pyr owners.. If you think you want a pyr..You must be a true dog lover and be willing to care & nuture this breed. Pyr are highly intelligent and must be respected.

I have a 4-month old male Great Pyrenees that was given to me by a friend. He and his littermate, another male, just graduated from dog obedience school last week at the top of their group, ahead of mature full-grown dogs who were much more experienced! He really is a great puppy. He is energetic, loving, learns easily and loves to please. We've only had him since January and we are so attached already.

We fell in love the pyrenees breed over 20 yrs
ago and have had three. We still have the third
one, she is almost 10. They are a special breed
and take allot of love and patients but they
are well worth it. They are the most beautiful dog
and very dedicated to their family and take their
duty of guarding their family very seriously
. They are wonderful with children and well deserve
the name 'gentle giants'.

Our two female Pyrs (Koda 4 yrs, Haley 2 yrs) have truly been "our babies." They are two of the most affectionate, gentle creatures we know. One trait for future Pyr owners to be aware of is their (sometimes excessive) barking. Great with kids and other dogs, all they need is room to run & play and lots of love!

We have had our Pyr for nearly a year and have fallen in love with her. Duchess is a wonderful companion and is wonderful with children. I didn't know anything about pyrs and had a little trouble training her as pyrs are a little rebellious at times. I wouldn't trade her for the world and the way she looks at me makes me want to sqeeze the stuffin's out of her. She is very protective of me (especially) and of my husband. All in all, pyrs are wonderful dogs because the goods outweigh the bads.

Acquired a pyr pup just last night - seven weeks old, never handled because he was going to be a livestock dog, but now he's going to be a family dog. We do have livestock, so he'll get a bit of that as well.
Our Rhodesian Ridgeback, the queen of the house, has accepted him fully and my two little boys are on cloud nine!

I would like some information on how to remove the stains under a pyrs eyes. I have a 3 month old puppy who is pure white except for these stains starting to come from his tear ducts? Do you know what causes this? Is it his diet, allergies, or just happens. Please let me know if you can help.

My husband and son and i all love this breed. We are even talking about getting a female so we can breed puppies. I don't think that enough people know about these wonderful dogs. I can't wait until we have puppies, but that is a while away. These dogs are more protective than i ever could have imagined. They are wonderful..

We just adopted 2 great pyr/newfoundland crosses. one takes after the newfie and the other looks just like a pyr except she has the "landseer" coloring of the newfie. We are really excited about these puppies and love them dearly. I owned Great Danes for the last 10 years, but cannot stand losing them every 7-8 years. They are truly a gentle giant, but hopefully will have better luck with these. at least their fur is more suited to Montana living and they won't mind going outside.

We have two pyrs (male and female). We purchased the male from
from a good breeder and adopted the female from
pyrenees rescue. It's a wonderful breed, gentle,
smart and protective. I would like to stress how
important it is for prospective buyers of pyrs to
understand the importance of training and that
they should understand some of the downside of
being a pyr owner, shedding, size, space require-
ments.

As a current and previous owner of this wonderful
breed, I must convey what a graceful animal they are.
How any animal with their size can can be so magically
light is beyond me. My love for this breed is magnified
with each encounter.

We have one 3yr old, kena. Didn't do enough research on the pyr. breed before buying her. we have a small house that she shares with us. Made many mistakes with her, but she forgives us. Barks and sheds, and has bad hips, but the best dog we could ever have (well maybe could do without the barking!)

My husband and I just acquired a six weeks old Great Pyrenees puppy and he is truly a precious dog. We have one other dog of mixed breed acquired earlier from the local pound. These two have proven to be great companions for each other. I think one dog alone would have been lonely. Our pup is now almost three months old and will soon be able to hold his own with the larger dog. In the meantime, they require much "baby sitting"!

I live in the deep south (Louisiana) and it is very hot and humid down here. Otherwise, I would own one. They truly are gentle giants

A woman I used to work with had a couple of Great Pyrenes and adored them. Her friend was so impressed by her dogs that she got one of her own.
I am looking for a suitable companion to my almost-two female black lab cross, a stray who showed up 10 months ago. She is basically a good dog, but hyper, likes to be the boss for sure and sometimes gets a little snappy because of it, and she barks as loudly and frequently as she can get away with, though she's getting better.
My boyfriend loves dogs but he's hyper himself and can't focus well when dogs are barking around him. I hear Great Pyrenes are laid-back, but do they bark much? We are moving to 10 acres of semi-forest, so they'll be room to run around, but if the dogs stay outside when we go to town, what do we need to keep a Great Pyrenes from breaking out? I don't want the dog I have galloping through my vegetable garden, let alone a dog that weighs two or three times as much...
How about grooming? My current dog doesn't need any except for the toenails. I need to know how much time grooming a GP is likely to take from the rest of my life.
One other thing. What other information does anyone have to sell the idea of this huge dog to my boyfriend?

I work with the elderly in an alzheimers facility. A woman comes into the community with
her Great Pyranese Dogs for pet therapy. They
are WONDERFUl with the older people. So kind and
gentle and beautiful too.I was not familiar with
the breed until she started coming.
