Hello I have a 5 month old boy, Duke. He is the greatest! He has never growled at us or my kids. And loves to play with our other 2 dogs (a chow mix and a Pom ) and they are both female and can get quite cranky with him, but he has never showed any form of aggreson. The question is how do you bath them when they out grow your bath tub ( it's a garden tub ) and he is to big already any suggestions?

Have recently adopted a lovable great white bundle of fur we call Frostbite Diamond "Bear". He is growing what seems like inches every day. We have learned to keep toilet lids down and water bowls to a minimum as he likes to swim indoors as well as outdoors. We are still being trained by Bear and will update as we progress. We are having problems with his grooming. Can anyone offer tips on how to keep him groomed properly.

I have a three year old female named Maggie and an 18 month male named Maxx (two X's in his name because he is extra extra large!). They are the loves of my life, and are ruled by my 15 pound cat named Nutmeg. These dogs are very independent, have very different personalities, and absolutely are in love with each other.

Our family has 2 GP's and they are great! One of ours named Prince, treats our little poodle like a Queen. He lets her sit in front of him, and he will clean her. When he sleeps he also lets the poodle lay right on his back like a big pillow while she sleeps. He is extremely gentle with our 5 yr old daughter. Best dog I have had! JK

I have a 3 yr old large all white male named Marlee. I wouldnt trade him for the world but he is a full time job. Marlee is too large to keep in a fence, I had a 5 ft tall chain link and he simply took it down with no effort. He used to dig holes up to 3 feet deep and he howls and barks all night long. He once brought an entire trash can home though I was dissapointed that he forgot the lid. He is very playful and considerate, he loves attention and I have never seen him aggressive toward any human. He is very aggressive toward animals that he is not familiar. I had to learn early on that he was going to do what he wanted and tolerate me at his whim. I recomend these dogs to someone with a lot of land and time. I have finally got used to the all night barking but it took him over a year to train me. But I can't think of another breed I would rather have.

I own a 3 year old male Great Pyrenees named "Hannibal" For the first time in my 50 some years I have found the breed of dog for me. There are not enough words of love and praise to extol upon this dog. I wish I had found the breed a long time ago as I don't think there will be too many more in my life. I highly reccommend the breed to anyone who is responsible enough to give it a loving, kind and caring home.

Our pyr, Phoebe, is 11 years old, and still has a mind of her own. Loves to dig huge holes in my flower beds. We bought her to guard our sheep and when we got out of the sheep business Phoebe "retired." She is in good health for her age and happy to see us when we get home at the end of the day.

Hi! We're looking for a watch dog but we have small children and don't want a "mean" breed of dog...Would the Pyrenee be a good choice? Where could I find one and how much would it cost?? I would really be interested in an older dog that is out of the "puppy" stage....Please let me know if you have any ideas.

HI Everybody: Aren't Pyrs great? Our 7 mo. old puppy is so adorable. I origianlly got him with hopes of breeding him down the road, but as he grows its clear his hips aren't 100%, and I'm sure that x-rays will confirm this, so breeding will be out. Inthe meantime, tho he can be as sweet as sugar and so wonderful, his stubborn disobedience can really be difficult-going on for hours at times. HAve any of you found neutering to help this? I would prefer not to neuter him, but if testosterone is the culprit here, it isn't going to get any better! Can anyone HELP me here? Thanks! Great web site. Sage in Colorado

I am searching for info. The part of Texas I live in is quite hot, but not humid. I want to know if the Pyr can handle the heat. The purpose the Pyr would be serving is to protect ducks from cyotes. Would the Pyr be the correct breed for this task?

I just wanted to say that we adopted our first pyr.Her name is Maya, she is now 14wks. old. I was wondering if anyone could give me any info on how to go about starting to show her. She is truely a gentle giant. If we ever get another dog it would be a pyr. I can't believe how calm & laid back she is. She follows me around every where i go. If anyone is in my area or anyone who would like to chat about their pyrs please w-mail me. Any info about showing Maya would be greatly appreciated. Love those pyrs.

Had a Pyr named Sarge, who died last Spring from cancer. He was a work dog, guarding our flock of sheep from coyotes and stray dogs. (The sheep farm location is 3 miles from the house.) I'm interested in getting a pair and raising pups. Info for a beginner dog breeder?

We live on a farm and breed and raise Pyrs, goats, ducks, and children. We enjoy showing our Pyrs but they also work. They are wonderful animals. We recently lost our 3 year old Belle to pyometra. She stayed in the house, knew all of us by name, she was a certified therapy dog and Canine Good Citizen. She was the "angel dog" to the folks at the nursing home. She will be sorely missed. But we still have 5 others to fill our hearts and time! At times I have considered raising smaller dogs, but we just love this breed so much. Pyrs are great dogs and beautiful majestic creatures. Thanks for the space to talk.

We have 2 Pyrs Lucy who will be 5 in october and Dan who will be 2 in July. Lucy is Dans aunt. We are crazy about these two couch potatoes. I had to laugh at the comments about stubborn pyrs. Ours are pyrs in the truest sense, they are extremely obedient- when food is involved and extremely disobedient when you really want them to come to you. But we wouldn't trade them in for anything Lucy is as laid back as she can be and Dan is all boy I've hears it takes three years until males mature and are laid back only another 12 months to go but they are loyal and affectionate and guard our home from from strangers lurking in the alley to a fly sitting on the edge of their food bowl. we are considering getting another one as we are moving to the country, we are considering rescue work as we have had a few overnighters waiting to go their new homes and almost kept them ourselves. Besides someone once told me that "pyrs are like potato chips, you can't have just one". She was right.

I am the very proud owner of a 5 month old pyr named Hudson. He is the gentlest and most relaxed puppy I have ever seen. He is 53.1 pounds at 20 weeks, that seems light to me but I don't care - he's wonderful. Great Pyrenees are the best!

Today is 30MAY99, just back from a Pet Fair, being held in Vancouver, a booth owner(maybe, Breed Club) having a Pyrenee there. This first approach has already given me deep impression of this breed: nice looking, tame, affectionate, it made me feel comfortable, like a family member when the time she's with me). In fact, I have been paying attention on Kuvasz, a close breed, comparatively with shorter hair I guess, as I have never been in contact with this breed(one more breed in my mind is, Rhodesian Ridgeback), what I know is from the books/magazines that I have read. If there is chance for me to keep one in the later days, Pyrenee would very much be one of my Top Choice.

Hi, We have a seven month old great Pyr. He weighs eighty pounds now, and is "da bomb". He does have the stubborness, like a Great Pyr, but does great with obideince classes and in public. I even take him to the place I work at that has many people in wheelchairs and with other disabilities. He behaves great in this environment and everyone loves him. We take him rollerblading. People are always saying what a beautiful dog he is and how well behaved he is. He will be getting a sister today or tomorrow, we will see how that goes. His sister is a Landseer (black and white Newfoundland). Just wanted to say hi, and let you all know Great Pyrs are the Best! John and Patti (and Samo the Pyr)

P.S. (accidentally sent the first portion of my message before I had finished..sorry) I noticed there was a message from Ty Perry, from Prince George, BC, dated 5/8/99 about his 1 1/2 year old Pyr, Boo. He mentioned the dog had recently had a seizure. (THIS IS NOT AN ADVERTISEMENT...but my business is Magnets for Health and Wellness, and I have worked with, and helped, hundreds of people and animals over the past 4 years. Not all magnets are created equal, so perhaps not all would prove effective, but, I believe I could provide such suggestions to Mr. Perry. In accordance with FDA regulations, I make no medical claims, but I can tell you that dogs with similar symptoms have appeared to have benefited. A few weeks ago I made a late night trip to an all night Emergency Animal Clinic to take a $200 magnetic pearl necklace and pet pad to a 10-week-old doberman puppy who was exhibiting the same symptoms as Boo. Please let me know if I can be of any assistance. My email address is suzannep@eznet.net

A thought just occured to me and I thought someone might have experience in this area. Since pyrenees have a lower metabolisum which must be taken into consideration when giving them anesthesia, do we also need to take this lower metabolisum into consideration when giving them other medications? What about worming meds that are usually toxins? Any thoughts on this topic would be appreciated.

My wife and I have a two-and-a-half-year-old male Pyr name Giovanni. We got him when he was seven months old, and he was the absolute cutest puppy imaginable. The thing that amazes us most about him is how gentle he is with children. Whenever he encounters a child, his grand tail starts swooping around (those with Pyrs know what I mean when I say "grand tail") and he wants to softly lick the child's face. It's quite amazing to see. Most dogs, of course, like to lick a child's face, but Pyrs seem like they genuinely care about children. We don't have kids yet, but we're convinced that Giovanni will adore them when we do. Great Pyrs are completely sweet 80% of the time, and they can be quite independent and are very very intelligent. And they love to bark. But they can also be very territorial, especially when it comes to food. And they're extremely protective. Giovanni seems to "sense" when something isn't right. Giovanni has the most expressive eyes I've ever seen in a dog, and I swear he has an advanced sense of humor. He is the greatest dog, and as sappy as this sounds, I can't imagine him NOT being a part of the family (even with all the Pyr hair all over everything). I think I'm now a Pyr devotee for life.

WE RESCUED, OR RATHER SOME UNRESPONSIBLE PERSON DROPPED HER OFF NEAR OUR COUNTRY HOME. SHE WAS ABOUT FOUR MONTHS OLD AT THE TIME. SHE SHOWED SIGNS OF BEING ABUSED. AT THE TIME WE DIDN'T KNOW WHATM BREED SHE WAS. JUST A VERY SWEET PUPPY. SHE WAS ALSO IN POOR HEALTH,SO WE TOOK HER TO THE VET UNTIL WE COULD FIND HER A HOME. THE LONGER SHE STAYED, THE MORE ATTACHED I BECAME. AFTER A WEEK I TOLD MY WIFE TO STOP LOOKING FOR A HOME FOR HER. WE HAVE NOW HAD HER EIGHT MONTHS. WE TOOK AN OBEDIENCE CLASS TOGETHER. (IF GRADED SHE PROBABLY WOULD HAVE GOTTEN A D-). SHE IS NOW VERY LOYAL AND MUCH MORE TRUSTING. I WANT TO START TRAINING HER TO PULL A CART. I SEND AWAY FOR TRAINING MANUALS, BUT WOULD LKE TO TALK TO SOMEONE WITH THIS EXPERIENCE. DOES ANYONE IN THE CINCINNATI AREA HAVE CARTNG DOGS ?

I have just begun to learn about these wonderful animals, and am convinced that this is the breed of dog we want. My fiancee and I just purchased 60 acres of land in Colorado, and will be raising all sorts of livestock. We need a dog to fend off opportunistic coyotes, and still be a member of the family. It looks like the Great Pyrenees is for us!

Great site. There's no other dog like a Pyr.We've had them all our lives. Our oldest now is the son of the top wining Pyrenees from 1982-1986(C&L's Hachi-Sama).His name is sabre'.He has been a grand national champion himself.(You said:feel free to brag). The newest addition to our family,Sampson is growing up to be the most beautiful creature on this earth.I stopped doing dog shows awhile ago when I realized it was for A more social standing than the love of the breed. Just like kids should be kids, dogs should be able to be dogs. There is no greater joy in the world than living in harmony with all creatures especially whith Great Pyrenes. Want to learn how to do this? I suggest reading,"The Hidden Life Of Dogs by Elizabeth Marshall Thomas.

This is a great site. It can be hard to find info about the pyrenees. Ours, Maggi, is an 8 month old lady who enjoys kicking me off the couch, grabbing the cats' tails as they pass by her, and decorating the house with long white hairs. She still thinks that she is a tiny pup, and loves to hop around the house like a rabbit. She does have the most wonderful temperment, but can be willful, especially when asked to do something that she isn't in the mood to do. She has a taste for socks and any kind of paper product that she can get her snout around, very tasty. We are hoping to teach her to ride in a canoe. Anyone have any experience with this? She loves water and has no fear whatso ever of it. Maggi is a constant adventure, very loving , and much friskier than I have ever heard possible for a big dog.

I have a cross between Pyr and a Saint Bernard I have had Gunnar since he was 8 weeks old, he is now 6 and a half years old. the only thing that makes him look like a saint Bernard is his mask, the restof him even his temper is a Pyrenees. Gunnar is Very protective of me and the less he is around people the less tolerant he is. I am worried because his seizures are getting more frequent(twice in two months) I would like any suggestions.

Hello, i got my dog from a friend on my women's hockey team - the last puppy to go, for free. I used to live with a Pyr cross - Luna - and knew this was the breed for me. My puppy was the darndest cutest pup i have ever seen. I taught him how to bark and to sit etc. His name started out as Carob, then grew into Cariboo (Boo) for short. He is medium size and quite a gentle, playful regal looking guy now. He is very adaptable to any location (i move around a lot, city and country). He absolutely goes crazy for friend-making with large livestock. When he was only 7 months old he had befriended the mare and her foal next door, and both horses would let him lick their faces. Cariboo is getting too big for a twin bed but he believes fully that he is a puppy still. He is very submissive and loves to stir things up with other dogs because he knows there is only a slim chance of any dog ever biting through his incredible thick ruff. The only "problem" with Boo is that he loves people too much. When i take him for walks off leash he runs full tilt when he sees anyone because he wants to make friends. When he reaches these adults/children they quickly relax because they can see his puppy-enthusiasm and gregariousness right away, but i think he has scared many people initially becasue all they see at first is a huge white dog speeding towards them. I wonder if anyone has any tips on how to get him to stop doing this. He absolutely will not listen to me once he sees someone, although once he's made friends he always comes back to me. The other strange thing about Boo is that he almost always refuses to eat his kibble in a dish and invariably dumps his dish over so his food is spread out and rolling across the floor. Not to mention for a dog his size he eats very little. I was told Boo had 1/4 german shepherd in him, but there is nothing about him that looks or acts like a shepherd. When i first moved back into town Boo dissapeared (door left open). Moments later i saw him running down the sidewalk with a donut in his mouth from the Tim Horton's around the corner. A car drove by with a woman pointing at him and laughing her head off. Although i was concerned about the busy road, i had to admit he looked pretty darn hilarious - this huge dog loping along in all his glory carrying a donut looking like he had just robbed a bank but was darn proud of himself! I highly reccommend these dogs as companions and as working dogs. Boo is one of the most cuddly dogs I've known and he is so gorgeous and soft that cuddling him is irresistable. He is now only 1 1/2 years. About three weeks ago i took Boo for a walk. When we returned home i fed him in the back yard and when he bent down to sniff his food he suddenly started shaking and became very wobbly and started walking around in circles. This lasted a few moments until he fell over and started shaking. For about ten minutes he was in and out of having these seizures. It's the first time I've seen this happen. My vet says he may have epilepsy, but it's not a big deal. I am not sure if this breed is prone to seizures or not. I talked to my hockey friend who told me his mother had seisures too and actually had to be euthanized at 6 years (however, she led a very harsh life guarding cattle on 200 acres and led pretty much a farm dog existence). Any experiences with this would be appreciated.

We brought Sam home about a year ago and those eyes, so human in nature, cause one's heart to just melt. We fell in love and the next thing I knew we had 2 females to go with our male. Watch out everyone these things are addictive. Everything you have heard about this breed is correct. They are gentle and loyal and only want to do their job - guard something. Our females have both given us a litter this week.

I own 2 wonderful Christmas Pyr's 2 years of age. My family has raised them for almost 15 years, and now that I am out of the house, I have my 2. The only sad thing is, is when my male was 1 week old, his mother broke his tail 1" from the backend and now he only has a stub. Let me tell you, it is the cutest thing you'll ever see, especially when he is happy. (But, my female has enough for them both put together.) My babies are the best breed I could ever recommend!

Harley is 10 years old. I got him when he was 9 months. He loves to run the large yard we have just about all day. Not as much as when he was younger but he still goes pretty good. He's in great shape. He's very protective and the biggest BABY I know. Thunderstoms do not sit well with Harley. He wants to sit in your lap if you could pick him up and knocks everything over. As my husband would say "he loves to bark at the wind". He will bark at anything that moved. Our neighors love him because they know when the mail is coming. They are alot of work but also alot of fun.

I have a fantastic 6 month old Great Pyrenees. She is a great pet, and brings me a lot of joy. Her name is Flour (my husband thought that would be a cute name for such a massive dog!) I have one concern - her eyes produce a lot of mucous. Is this normal, is she allergic to something - should I rinse them or just let them run? Thank for any information!

I am the proud owner of a 6.5 month old 82 lb. Pyr.His name is Joseph Adam.He is a very smart and playful guy. I have read many entries in the guest book about peoples Pyr's "talking" back and being a little disobiedient.I have yet to experience this "trait" in my dog.On the contrary he listens quite well. The first time I ever heard him bark was last night when my friend introduced him to his Iguana. It was quite an amusing reaction on the dogs part.He was rather disgruntled when the Iguana tried to smack him with his tail.Even when he was successful, the dog just bounced around and barked. He never made an attempt to attack the lizard. He stays very close to me when we walk (on or off lead).I have owned many large dogs in my time and I have to say that the Pyr is the best I have ever had the privelege to come in contact with.I am sold to this breed and will never own any other as long as I can help it.For anyone unsure and thinking of getting one,I say do it,they are truly the best dog in the world.

We have 2 adult Pyn's and 6 puppies (7 weeks old) and can't express enough what great dogs these are. Smart, docile, gentle and protective. I'm always learning about them and the more I learn, the more amazed I am. Question: We got a brown puppy in our litter. We own both parents, both purebreds (only one is registered. I have tried to find out if this is a common event or if another breed may have interferred unknown. In the book we have on the Pyrn's, all the puppies are depicted as brown. Is this normal? Will his color eventually fade, as do the brown/gray markings on ears, back and tail?

Our 9 year old pyr-dog, named 'Prince of Vivians Castle' is very friendly. We wanted to have a dog for guarding our cafe and as a friend. But we saw Prince and we immediatelly fell in love with him. So we have a very friendly, everybody's friend-dog. We took him from a home for lost animals, about seven years ago. He seems to be very old, but is doing very well. We walk every day about 2 hours (to be honest about 25 minutes) because he's very lazy and very slow, but he's old. We have a huge garden, wich is his domain. When he's gone to the woman who brushes his hair and washes him, he walks around like he's the king of the world. So he's a credit to his name. Regards, Geert & Pamela

I breed and show pyrs for the last 20year's, The 10 I have are part of my family, some or most can be couch potato's.They are kind and clean and love people.Kid's that come over never want to go home,And when they get that devilish look in their eyes,You see it fast for that is when they start running around and making everyone laugh and play with them.Pyrs are the best for any age.And they are alot of work, but well worth it.

i stopped traffic today on a very busy hiway to resuce a great pyrenees that was just running down the road, slowing the traffic behind him. i can't believe no one stopped! i pulled over into the "suicide lane" and stopped to jump out and "do something" i had now idea exactly what i was going to do with such a large dog that i was a stranger to. i can't believe he didnt get hit. my dog(australian shephed) was in the truck with me and barked, which got the dog's attention. he came right to the truck and sat down. i had some dog food with me and tried to lure the big fellow into the back of the pick up. he tried to climb over the side of the truck, but of course couldnt quite make it. i lassoed him with my dog's leash and tried to help him up over the tail gate, but he wouldnt jump and just tried to climb. i attempted to lift his lower legs to "boost him up" but he growled at me when i tried..so i stopped! one person from the stopped traffic jumped out and tried to help me, and just when it seemed that it was going to be hopeless, an animal control officer came along! this dog is now in the pound for 7 days (as of 4/27) and i am afraid may end up put to sleep, or possibly put up for adoption at the local shelter..can anyone tell me if there is a great pyr' rescue group out there? this dog was too beautiful and obviously had been someone's dear pet, as he really wasnt vicious, especially given the fearful circumstances i found him in. please email me at xrayer31@aol.com to find out more about this dog, or to let me know about a possible rescue society. thanks!!

I have a 2 year old female named Pepsi Macu' and a 4 yr old male named Samson BO'. They are both the most loving affectionate dogs I've ever had. Pepsi just gave birth to her first litter this weekend and I'm the proudest grandmother. I had never known about this breed until someone mentioned it and I saw an ad in the paper selling one. After getting Pepsi I've been hooked. She is very spoiled and sometimes my friends think I go overboard for her, but she's the best companion I've ever had and I wouldn't know what to do without her.

I currently own a four year old male, "Alapaha Cherokee Raider". I will never own another breed of dog--wish I'd known about pyrs when my children were small. I have goats, emus, rheas and ostrich and Raider is king of this farm, let me tell you. I recently had him on an emergency trip and he woke us barking furiously about ll p.m. We were in a motel in Montgomery, AL. A young man was standing at the front of my truck and Raider was in the truck bed in a truck-size cage. I stuck my head out the door and demanded to know what he was doing. He said he wanted to know if it was a bear or a dog and could he pet it. I said, "Sure, I don't mind if you don't mind learning to write with your other hand." He left and we had no further disturbances that night. Truth is, Raider has never bitten ANYONE. My husband passed away 2 months ago, and he has gotten so protective of me it's almost scarey. I think it's high time he had a lady companion of his own.

We adopted Dante from the local Great Pyr Rescue. He's been with us for 18 months, is 3 years old and weighs about 150lbs. He is extremely intelligent, scared to death of thunderstorms (we have to sedate him in order to maintain our household), and is a cookie monster. He will open kitchen cupboards, cookie jars, tupperware, you name it - to get a cookie. Otherwise he's just a love.

Hello! I just wanted to say how wonderful the Great Pyrenees are, they are truely a gentle giant, very protective of you and your family, and yet has a lot of charisma. However, I must warn you that they are barkers. He will bark at strangers, cats, birds, etc, almost anything he sees or hear. I guess this is the protective side of him- very territorial. I was under the impression that pry's were couch potatoes however my pry is not. He loves to be on the go and loves his hikes, walks, and romping around with his budy, who's an Akita. They are truely good dog but if you're in a small place make sure that you do take him out if he is as active as my dog. Thanks for hearing my story.

I have an 11 month old, 150 pound GPyr known as Jacksons very own Superhero. Called Hero for short. He is the sweetest, gentlest, dog I have ever known....but he sure digs! I don't think I will ever own another breed.....The next door neighbours have his brother and the two of them are so wonderful with our little children. I just love him. (PS in winter Hero hauls one kid on the sleigh and packs the other on his back with no trouble whatsoever....in fact he looks forward to the work). I can't believe that at 11 months old this dog's back end is as high as my waist!!!! He's HUGE!
