My husband and I have two of these Polar Bears in our lives. Oberon is 7yrs. and has a new baby brother Taliesin 7 months old. I was kind of leary about having two boys, but they seem to have squared things away between themselves as to who is boss, it's certainly not any human that lives here!!!!!

When I was a little girl, I had a Pyrenees with the name Noela. She was very beautiful and obedient. She used to go sit in the tub and hollor if she thought it time for a bath! And she never slept on the ground, always on one of the garden chairs! When she was 8 months old, a car ran her down before our house - it was a tragic day in our whole family. But since then,I've always had a soft spot for the Great Pyrenees.

We have a 6 month old Pyr named Sophie. For 27 years we had Newfs. Belle, our last Newf died of natural causes at the age of 15. I really missed her. But a few months ago we got Sophie and are delighted with her. She walks 2 and a half miles with me everyday. I am slowly learning about Pyrs and their habits. Would love to receive any info on them.

We have a 3 yr. old Pyr. named Sparty. He is a very loving dog. We invested in an invisible fence for Sparty, since we are in a new neighborhood which doesn't allow fences. At first, I was very skeptical and his pain tolerance seemed to great. But, to my amazement, it took him about 2 mo. to become completely invisible fence trained and now he absolutely loves the freedom it allows him. His barks seem to be more to draw attention to himself than territorial. He loves anyone who comes to pet him -- if they dare because of his 110 lbs. Sparty has a wonderful temperment to our children, which is why we strongly considered the Pyrs. He is very loveable.

We became interested in the Great Pyrenees when we found one on the side of the road in the middle of the summer in Brandon, FL. He was beautiful and sweet and charming. You know, all the things the Great Pyrs are! Well, we did find his owner who was worried sick and felt that we wanted another big dog. We have had our Bullmastiff, Guilty, since he was 8wks old! He needed a playmate! Well, we joined a Pyr List, made some friends, participated and volunteered for rescue and rescued our own Great Pyr! His name is Zeke. His is a sad story but we have him now and we love him VERY much! He is GREAT! He is the sweetest dog in the world and he and our Bullie, Guilty, are like brothers now! Zeke has been a wonderful addition to our family. He is EVERYTHING the Great Pyr is and should be! Thank you for letting us share our story! Robert & Lea

My Pyr is now 11 years old. We have had two liters of beautiful puppies. I have been blessed with a long time companion. She now suffers from arthritic hips, but still thinks she can chase the cats. Her eyes and mind are as clear as ever and she still provides me with that knowing love that a Pyr can give. It's hard to believe that a Pyr could get any sweeter, but I think that the older my Belle has gotten the sweeter and more loving she has become.

I had a great pyrenees until about august of 99. I left for school, and my parents didn't want her so they made me take her to the Humane Society, it was the hardest thing I ever had to do. Casey (my pyr) was the best dog I could have ever wanted to have. She was my best friend, and I would have done anything for her, I regret going away to school for the soul reason that I had to get rid of my dog. If anyone knows of a person who adopted a 4 year old female Great Pyrenees in St.Louis Missouri in late August, I would really like to know how she is doing. Those of you who have a Great Pyr, go give it a hug, and realize what a precious gift you have.

My Pyr is four years old and we love him dearly. He has been to obedience classes and is a very quick learner when he feels like it. My problem is his is very territorial and recently bit a delivery person. The dog was tied on the porch in plain view and barking like crazy. My father was with him and is 81 and walks with a walker. He told this person six times as he was comming up the driveway not to come any closer to the dog but he got closer anyway. He even tried to make friends with the dog and waved his clip board in the dogs face. Will needless to say the dog bit him in the leg. It wasn't bad but he did bleed a little. I'm sure I will probably be sued for his stupidity. I feel this because a car road by a few days later taking pictures of the house. My dog never grawls at anyone he knows nor has he ever attacked anyone he knows. My question is what can I do if anything to stop him bitting. I'm afraid with the laws now that even if someone should break into my house and the dog bites him I'll be the bad guy and the dog will be put down. I did not buy the dog for protection and someone is always with the dog when he is out front. It looks like the dog will be confined to the back yard from now on because of a untrained human.

i have a 5yr old pyr/yellow lab mix named daizee. she looks like a full pyr, minus about 10-15 lbs. Just recently she gained two new companions, a minature schnauzer, named kohl, and my daughter, arizona.... personaly i think daizee prefers arizona's company to kohl's... less energetic play partner, haha. daizee is like a second mother to both them. when either of them cry, daizee is right there to make sure they are ok. it's great.... but then aren't pyr's supposed to be??? haha.

We had a Great Pyrenees for almost 13yrs named Palcantra. He was the most loveable, funny dog I have ever encountered. All 125lbs of him would try to get into my little twin bed and the both of us would end up on the floor--every night. I miss him very much and recommend this breed to anyone.

I love this page! I have a 10 month old pyr. A few months back I thought she was a "PILL". I understood she was just a puppy but I really thought I wasn't going to make it being a pyr owner. THEN my husband got another puppy (different breed) and WOW could I see the difference between these two different types of dogs! Yes, pyrs must be kept on a leash or a fenced in yard at all times. Yes they can bark like maniacs at anything and everything. Yes, they shed terribly (I keep my pyr inside the house). But oh, the love and gentleness and trust she gives to me is unbelievable!!! I really noticed the difference when we got this new puppy. I cannot believe the difference between other dog breeds and pyrs. I've read what others have said but never experienced it myself until now. So, if you're discouraged about your pyr puppy-----don't be. Give him/her time to grow up. Take it from one who has been there. It is SO worth it to own a pyr!!! :o)

We have a 3 yr. old Pyr-Border Collie mix who has the coloring of a border collie but the personality of a Pyr. I can't imagine living without this sweet girl- she is our baby. We moved from Colorado and took Beauj from her playmate. She seemed so sad and alone that we decided to get her a companion. Well, now we have a 9 wk old male Pyr named Amadis and he has the same personality as Beauj and they get along wonderfully. We are so happy that we went with another Pyrenees. I have two queestions for you Pyr lovers: 1) Beauj was potty trained in one day - we are still having trouble with Amadis. What gives? 2) We shave Beauj twice a year because of the heat, but she is part Border Collie. Can we shave Amadis? Thanks and Adios

My Pyr's name is Buddy. He stays with my sheep day and night. He and I pal around or buddy togather in the afternoons and on weekends. He is a real joy. He is most enjoyable. I wish he were a little more agressive toward strangers, but he seems to love everyone.

I have a small herd of boar/boar cross goats. Along with the goats, I have a FB Pry male (Huey)and a Pry/Anatolian Cross female (Daisy) who have literally grew up with our goats. Well, Huey and Daisy had puppies 2.5 weeks ago. The puppies' eyes are opened and they are becoming very active. I could use some guidance on when to start their shots, "mush" food, etc. from someone who has had some experience. Any assistance would be appreciated! Thank you!

It's great to hear from so many other Pyr owners all over the world -- we don't run into many here in Atlanta. We got our 4-year-old Pyr as a puppy and he's a GREAT dog -- no problems. I'd like to suggest to anyone just getting a Pyr puppy that you take it to a "puppy kindergarten" class if you can. These classes teach the dog (and owners) some simple obedience stuff, but far more important, they socialize the dogs to other people and other dogs. It's all low-key and fun -- the puppies love it because they get to play with other puppies and get treats.

HELP! My husband surprised me with a great pyrenees puppy last night. She is four months old. We have a thirteen year old dog currently (Kona) who is a lab/shepherd mix and she is about 100 pounds. This puppy is huge - I cannot even lift it. Kona is barking at the puppy when it comes near. The puppy does not want to be in its cage. We do not have a big house or big yard. Any advice about the breed or how to handle or train the new puppy would be greatly appreciated. Any suggestions for names? Please email me at christineschwinge@home.com. Thanks very much!

We love the breed. We had one " Sadie Bear " and lost her to bone cancer which is common in larger breeds. Two months later we got another one "Sarah Jane", she in now 1year and 4 months old. She is so much like Sadie Bear. They are a very gentle loving breed. We love them very much.

We have a 10 month old Great Pyrenees puppy. She is absolutely wonderful in most every way. .good on lead, obeys the commands she's been taught, house-broken, is not destructive. . .but. ..isn't there always a but??. ..she has three places in our house that she is VERY protective of and when my 12 year old son approaches me in any of these places, she growls at him. ..if I scold her, her growling turns fierce and she runs to her crate. It is SO frustrating! She plays with my son, sleeps draped across his body when they're watching TV, cleans out his hears for him (they've never looked cleaner!). ..but she acts this way . ..it almost always happens when I'm in the same vicinity. .. we've gathered that she feels that Dan is her litter mate and that I'm the mamma and that she wants me all to herself. I DO love her and it has been a very intense love. ..lately I've backed off and have been having Dan and my two daughters (whom, by the way, she never growls at) feed and care for her almost exclusively to lessen this bond that she and I have. . .am I doing right? Am I just mis-understanding the breed? Her growling, initially, almost seems like she's swearing at us. ..it only turns really snarly if I scold her for it. . .she also growls to go outside. . .she stands and stares at me and growls until I let her out, or fill her water bowl. .she's done this since she was a tiny pup . .it's not a sinister growl. .just a kind of "aww, come on already" kind of a sound. Also, she went thru her first heat about a month ago and this behavior seems to have heightened since then, along with her appetite. . .is that what happens? Would having her spayed help lessen this problem? She had a short period at five months when this same behavior increased and I read that it was her second 'fear' period and it did lessen within a few weeks. At this point, I really can't get a handle on whether or not she poses a danger to my son or to children visiting our house who don't understand her 'special places' . .99% of the time she's a dream dog and we LOVE having a giant breed. We have signed her up for obedience classes and I have spoken to the teacher and she immediately assumed that Blizzard was vicious. ... but that's not the case at all. ..just territorial. .. Sorry to babble on. ..this has been a very unsettling thing for our family. ..we adore this dog and want more than anything to work thru this. ..do you have any suggestions or advice as to whom to talk to? (Can you tell that our other dog is a Peek-a-Poo?) Thanks for any help that you can provide.

I have 100 plus goats, mostly Boer cross. I currently have 3 adult Pyrenees x Anotolian cross who follow thwm all over the pasture, keeping coyotes, birds, leaves in the wind, etc. away from the goats. They are fantastic! I also have two female pups almost 5 weeks old who need a good home. I would trade for a female from different blood lines. One is masked, the other is solid

My husband and I live with a female five year old Great Pyr. Her name is Bayona. She is named after the small city in northern Spain. She is our 1st dog. She is like having a two year old child at home instead of a DOG. Bayona is SO fierce and protective of us, and the property. She is warm and loving and CUTE! We love her to bits. I am sure I will always have Great Pyrs over any other dog. Big dogs are the best dogs.

I currently own four Great Pyrenees but have owned a total of six. I came to this page while writing an English paper for college for information. It looks great!!! These dogs are the greatest for protection, on both yourself and your animals. I don't think I will own another dog ever, just for the simple fact that I have never had one turn on me or my family or friends!

We have a 5 year old female Great Pyrenees, Lakota. We added a German Shepherd puppy, Tak, a year ago. There seems to be a problem as to who is going to be the "alpha dog"---the German Shepherd breeder assured us it would be the male shepherd, but so far, Lakota rules the roost. Her pedigree includes the Karolaska line & Tip 'N Chip. At about 120 lbs, she is fit and rugged, living in this northcountry she gets a lot of exercise (not to mention being made to play puppy games with the 85 lb Tak!) We love them both, but "Lakota of the Languedoc" is our baby!

I have a eight year old female Pyr. A fantastic campanion for my family which includes two golden retrievers. Although she is quite content to believe we all are her little sheep and must protect us from all evils of the world, she will not tolerate any other dogs in her back yard in her presence. It is her back yard, and no one may enter without her permission!

I just adopted a 9 year old great pyrenees/german shepard cross named Bandit. He is huge and happy and wonderful. He came to me in bad shape, but with grooming and some aspirin he's perked right up, and now he's trying to play with my puppy. I had no idea what a wonderful dog I was getting. He is very stubborn, but he does listen. He's friendly with my other pets, and is quickly learning who is allowed in my yard. I don't understand how anyone could have neglected such a fine dog. I'm just glad they took him to the shelter where I found him. I love my Bandit.

My family and I are the proud owners of an 8 month old Great Pyrenees. Her name is Duchess. She has brought our family such great joy.. We have 5 children ages 3-14 and they love her so much she has a hard time finding quiet time for herself.. Before Duchess my wife and I had never heard of her breed, my wife saw her while in the pet store getting bird food and fell in love with her, next day she had me there where I too fell in love with her and bought her on the spot. She was 2 months old.. She has brought so much happiness in our lives we want another Pyrenees for us as much as a companion for Duchess.. The Great Pyrenees is by far the most beautiful dog we have ever seen and until her we never considered owning a dog..

Great Pyrenees have been great guardian dogs for our sheep herds. The dogs have great temperments. At the same time they do a great job of keeping predators like bears, coyotes, mountain lions, and bobcats from snacking on the sheep. We have somewhere in the range of 10-15 dogs at any given time. They are Great!!

I like to look through these websites to see the beautiful Pyrenees that people have for pets. I am a proud owner of one of these beautiful creatures. Her AKC name is " Kilaeua Kama Le'he Wahine O'Hau" translated that means : Kilaeua Princess of Snow. She was a birthday present from my husband in 1994. We named her in Hawaiian so, that there would be no chance of duplicating a name that could already exsist. She is white as snow and as stubborn as "Mt. Kilauea" the volcano on the Big Island of Hawaii. But, she is my baby and she is most definetly a "mama's girl". She is the second Pyr we have owned, the first being one of the best dogs we have ever owned. Her named was " St. Shastine Valentine" and went by "Shasta" for short. She lived to the ripe old age of 18 years before she developed hip displasia. We couldn't see getting anything other than another Pyr, after she passed. We love our Pyr and so does everyone that drives by or stops in. She is the light of my life.

I signed in in June and now I am back to tell youthat we have 'rescued' another pyr. She is about 11/2 years old and was very underweight, We had her spayed and checked out by the vet and other than being 30 lbs under weight she is healthy. We have become very attached to her, so needless to say, we are keeping her. We are having one problem with her though, she is very territorial where food is concerned. Will this end when she bulks up and she knows there will always be food for her, or is this just what it is? any suggestions out there?

My wife and I have thirteen Great Pyrenees on our farm in Middle Tennessee. We started withm one "Bo" and added a little "Brandy" stired and now have 13. They are working protectors of our goat herd. My grandchildren love to play with the big polar bears. I have had many dogs in past years, but the Great Pyrenees is the most loving of all.

I own a four year old GP named Polo. He weighs roughly 105 pounds. I've had him for the last two and a half years. I got him from a GP rescue group from Wisconsin. He's a product of a divorce. He's adjusted well, and is the calmest and happiest dog I've ever had.

I just was interested in finding out if a great pyreneese was good for our family. We have a medium sized yard, one child, a cat, and will eventually be getting a doberman. My husband and i are each getting our own dogs, so i am being very choosy about this decision. I have always wanted a white, majestic looking dog. I was interested in a Kuvas, but read more about them and found you needed to spend a lot of time training, etc. I am home all day with my son, so the dog will rarely be lonely. I want a friendly dog, but one that will not be too friendly to everyone that walks into my house. I do not want one that barks alot or is hyper. I first saw one in a vet's office and i was stunned at how gorgeous it was.The owner seemed to think that this was the best dog in the world to have, and that it was great with kids. I guess my concern is the doberman that we will eventually get. My husband grew up with them and really wants one. Will this be a bad match? Basically, does all of this sound like a good home for a Great Pyrenees? I would be very interested in your comments, since you know more about their persnoalities and temperments. I am taking my dog search maybe a little too serously, but i really want the perfect dog for our family, yet one that is beutiful and a little less common than a lab or golden retriever. One more question, how much grooming do they require, and do they shed uncontollably. We also live in the south, so i wonder if it may be too hot. Thanks for listening. Don't worry about a detailed response!

I have owned Pyr's for 15 years. My first was a pound puppy who weighed 165 lbs. The day he died my second was born. He brought new life into our sad days. We added a little female who still is a genteel being. I rescued my forth. She thinks she rules the world and melts our hearts. It's a wonderful life to share with Pyr's.

We are looking for a guard dog for our farm and checked out this site. We have 3 young children and 2 setters(1 irish and 1 english)and a nasty bear population. We can not let our children or dogs out unsupervised. We would like to have a dog who will play with the children and fiercly guard them against harm. We welcome any input on this issue. please e-mail us. thank you.

I am the proud owner of a Yellow Labrador however I recently had the pleasure of meeting the owner of a 6 month old Great Pyrenees. I was impressed in so many ways I'm seriously considering purchasing one myself. My new found interest led me to your home page on the internet.

I am the proud companion of two Great Pyrenees. Cosette, my older working dog, takes herself very seriously, but loves being a pet too. Millie is my young porch puppy who feels she doesn't have to work because Cozy does such a good job. I have the safest chickens in Hays County! I love this breed.
